The Rent Control Board was scheduled to hold a meeting on June 10th at 6:00 p.m. via Zoom, according to information published on their website. The meeting did not occur, and Documenters were only made aware of the new date when they logged into the Zoom link and noticed the date on the screen was June 17th.
When the NWK Documenters team called the office, we were placed on hold for over 20 minutes before being transferred again and getting connected. Our team was told that, given the statewide and local elections on Tuesday, June 10th, the public meeting was moved to Tuesday, June 17th. Typically, meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month, unless there is a conflict, as in this situation. Our team asked the office where this information was shared or posted to update the community. We were told that the IT department was supposed to update the website, and if no update was made, they may have forgotten.

While it is understandable that meeting dates are changed or postponed, it is the responsibility of the local government to make these changes more efficiently and transparently, so the community is aware. The new meeting date has not been posted on their website, despite the meeting being moved to tonight. The office can be reached at 973-733-3675 with any questions, but only between the hours of 8:30 am - 4:30 p.m. The meetings are held at 6 p.m., so answers can not be found until, potentially, a meeting has already passed. The number of barriers that exist for our team, let alone average Newarkers, to find updated and credible information about our local government is unacceptable.
Join NWK Documenters and help our team keep community members informed about updates around the city!
