New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice and Newark Documenters are proud to present: "Power to the People!" a new series that provides the tools, skills, and knowledge for every day people to investigate, agitate, activate, and create change.

"Power to the People" is a movement based training series that includes special guest lectures, workshops, skill shares, and community discussions to equip our communities with the knowledge, skills, and network to investigate issues, empower the people, and fight back!

Each workshop is designed to focus on investigative, research, and storytelling skills or to deliver practical tips and ethics for reporting on issues in your community. Together, NJAIJ and NWKD are excited to bring you key experts and speakers to help better understand the rapidly changing political system around us and how you can hold decision makers accountable!

NJAIJ and NWKD kicked off this effort in February of this year by convening a panel of experts, organizers, and faith leaders on "Crimmigration." Crimmigration refers to the political tactic of blurring the line between the criminal legal system and the immigration system to the point of near irrelevance, despite these two systems being constitutionally and fundamentally separate. In cities like Newark, that means Black and Brown communities live in the shadow of mega million dollar facilities like Delaney Hall, while federal agents lead high speed chases through the streets resulting in multi-car crashes. A livestream of our panelists conversation is linked here.

March's Power to the People workshop is "FOIA and Find Out!", a workshop dedicated to how every day New Jerseyans can file requests under the Freedom of Information Act to investigate everything from local polluters to billionaire groups like GEO Group.
